Dr. Sylvia Earle
Founder, Mission Blue
National Geographic Society Resident Explorer, Dr. Sylvia Earle, is an oceanographer, explorer, author, teacher and experienced scientist in the field of research, as well as experienced government official and nonprofit private organization director.
She served as Chief Scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and founded Deep Ocean Exploration and Research Inc., Mission Blue and the Sylvia Earle Alliance, among others. Dr. Earle obtained a masters and doctorate from Duke University, possesses 22 honoris causa doctorates and has written over 180 scientific, technical and popular publications. She has also directed over 100 expeditions and registered more than 7,000 hours underwater.
Her work centers on developing a global network of protected ocean areas, Hope Spots, aimed at creating consciousness in order to safeguard important ecological systems that provide biodiversity maintenance and secure ecosystem services among other benefits.
