The critically endangered Eastern Pacific leatherback has specific nesting habitat requirements

By Dr. George Shillinger, Scientific Director for the MarViva-Mission Blue Costa Rica Thermic Dome Expedition

“The critically endangered Eastern Pacific leatherback has specific nesting habitat requirements. Only Playa Grande and a few scattered beaches along the Central American coastline offer such characteristics. It is imperative that we properly conserve and manage these unique coastal habitats, but equally important that we do not neglect protecting the sea turtles and other species throughout their complete life history – within coastal internesting habitats, migratory routes, and oceanic foraging habitats. The Costa Rica Thermic Dome Hope Spot and it’s surrounding waters are particularly important for leatherback turtles and other highly migratory species within the Eastern Pacific.”
